How to Stay on Track and Make March Madness a Slam Dunk

Losing weight and maintaining your weight loss is sometimes a challenge. And between all the watch parties, basketball games, and social gatherings this time of year, it can be absolute madness!

With March Madness just around the corner, we want to share our best tips and tricks to help you stay on your weight loss (or maintenance) game while watching your favorite teams win. 


1. Come hungry

In the Naturally Slim program, you learn how to listen to your body and recognize your hunger patterns—now it’s time to put those skills to good use! If you go to a party, make sure you arrive at a level three. That way, you’re only eating when you’re truly hungry!


2. Don’t make what you eat a game-time decision.

Studies show that people tend to eat more when in groups, so planning ahead in social situations is key to continue losing and maintaining weight!

Try bringing your favorite dish to the party. Not only will the host appreciate the help, but then you’ll know there will be something at the party you truly enjoy. Going to a restaurant or bar? Check out the menu beforehand and choose something you’ll look forward to eating.


3. Choose an all-star starting lineup

Teams make sure their best players are in their starting lineup, so they’re ready to take on the competition right out of the gate. Why not use this mentality when it comes to eating at parties, too? Make sure that you’re eating your favorite foods first. That way, you’re left feeling satisfied rather than filling up on foods you don’t really want.  

And once you’ve chosen your all-star food lineup, make sure you practice the Naturally Slim principles—chew slowly, thoroughly taste your food, and put your fork or food (hello chicken wings and cheeseburgers) down between bites. Eating mindfully will help you fill up faster and avoid overeating!  


4. Take a lap and go for three!

If you find yourself at a party or a buffet this season, make sure you’re using the “rule of three.” Take a lap around the table and take inventory of all your options. Once you’ve seen what’s available, start with your three favorite foods and only come back for more if you’re still hungry.

Nervous you might not know which food play to make? Take a minute before you go to the party and think about what kind of foods you’re really craving. You can even ask the host what dishes they’re going to put out. That way, you’ll know what you’re looking for when you walk in. 


5. Practice makes perfect

Don’t let one slip-up derail you for the rest of the season. If you overeat at a watch party or bar, just wait until you’re back at a level three to eat again. Remember, with Naturally Slim, each meal is a new opportunity to practice your principles and hop back on your losing (weight) streak.
